Vacuum heat treatment

When nitrogen is used as a cooling medium for nitrogen filling and pressurized oil quenching, adjust the nitrogen pressure of the nitrogen generator to improve the hardenability of steel parts and protect the electric heating elements of the vacuum furnace;

Common Mistakes and Avoidance Methods

 

Mistake 1: Parts still discolor even when using 99.9% pure nitrogen

Cause: 99.9% pure nitrogen contains 1000 ppm of oxygen, which is 100 times the requirement for bright annealing.

Solution: Upgrade to a truly high-purity nitrogen supply (oxygen content < 10 ppm).

Mistake 2: Oxide scale appears during the cooling process

Cause: Nitrogen flow stops too early. Oxidation may still occur at temperatures above approximately 300°C.

Solution: Continue flowing nitrogen until the parts are cooled to below 250°C. If possible, use a furnace cooling jacket.

Mistake 3: Inconsistent processing results between batches

Cause: Air leakage (from furnace door seals, thermocouple ports) or unstable moisture content introduced by the workpieces.

Solution: Conduct furnace leakage rate testing with soapy water under positive pressure; if workpieces have been cleaned or stored in a humid environment, they must be pre-dried.
