Safety Precautions To Be Observed When Using Methanol

Methanol is flammable,its vapour can form an explosive mixture with air,and there is a danger of burning and exploding in the of open fire and at high temperatures(470°C);methanol is also poisonous,and care should be taken to avoid

swallowing it.

 

In order to exceed the limiting proportion of the mixture of methanol vapour with air beyond the lower limit of gas combustion (i.e.6 Vol%),due attention should paid to ventilation in the shed where the methanolstill is placed.The methanol tank should be kept in the open air (sheltered).Appropriate foam,carbonchloride,and/or dry powder extinguishers should be available in the shed for an emergency.

 

 

Decomposition Technology

Pure industrial methanol of a purity of9%or more is subjected to a decomposition reaction at a temperature of 650-90°C,yielding a mixed gas mainly composed ofH2 and CO.This mixed gas can be used as a heat treatment atmosphere for various purposes,and at 900C,C≈1%;therefore,it can not only be used to protect various materials from decarburization and oxidation at high temperatures,but also be used an atmosphere for various chemical heat treatments. The composition of the decomposition gas of industrial methanol is as follows:H2-66%;CO-33%;CO2.1-1%;CH4-<1.5%.
